Shirley Carlos photograph collection, 1898-1937.

The Shirley Carlos Photograph Collection consists of 91 photographs, the bulk of which were taken in the Matanuska Valley and Palmer areas of Alaska in 1935-1937. Also included are images of Dawson, Yukon (1899-1903), and of mining and miners on the creeks in the vicinity of Fairbanks, Alaska (1910). Subjects include street scenes, farming, mining, buildings, homesteads, persons, tent cities, water fronts, and fishing. Several of the photographs feature Almer J. Peterson, the father of Shirley Carlos, who was an attorney for the Matanuska Colony.

The organization was established in 1935 under the Federal Emergency Relief Administration's program of organizing rural rehabilitation organizations in the United States. It was the administrative agency over the Matanuska Valley Colony in Palmer and was responsible for providing land and houses for the colonists, and for governing the colony.
